  • a serious omission

    Yeah, so I got to age 38 before I ever heard Neil Young’s Harvest. Sue me. And all because Nichol is teaching me The Needle & The Damage Done on guitar.

    And I can add Old Man to my list of “Songs I thought were recent originals, but are in fact old covers”. Thought it was a Wailin’ Jennies original (I know, I should read liner notes). I thought the same of Disguises (original: The Who; cover: Of Montreal) and Waterloo Sunset (original: The Kinks; cover: Robyn Hitchcock).

  • a sneaking respect for convolvulus

    Our front garden seems to be mostly convolvulus; that sneaky bindweed that trails white or pink trumpet-shaped flowers. It grows so fast, I’m wondering if you could harvest it for biomass energy.

    I really dislike gardening, except for growing sunflowers. There are a bunch coming up quite well. I wonder if anyone else would like to use the rest of the garden, or suggest things to do with it?

  • review of CanWEA 2005 swag bag

    So I’m at the 2005 CanWEA conference for the next few days. The swag bag is a standard nondescript nylon thing, thankfully big enough to take my iBook and a few other bits and pieces. The contents are a bit disappointing, though:

    • a very plasticky flashlight that I may discard after harvesting its batteries.
    • a small bag of jujubes.
    • a copy of North American Windpower magazine (which in itself is quite a decent magazine, so is actually one of the highlights).
    • a trade show guide, but no conference program (they were held up in customs; can’t we print ’em here?)
    • various company brochures, zzzz.

    You’ll note an absence of useful pens, pads, USB keys, model turbines, or other special swag. I was hoping for more …
