That was a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>It seems to think that<\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-family: andale mono,times;\">8\u00c3\u201410\u00c2\u00b9\u00c2\u00b2\u00c3\u00b76\u00c3\u201410\u00e2\u0081\u00b9<\/span><\/pre>\n<p>comes to<\/p>\n<pre>1.333333333\u00c3\u201410\u00c2\u00b2\u00c2\u00b9<\/pre>\n<p>which is not correct. It would, if I&#8217;d\u00c2\u00a0 typed it as:<\/p>\n<pre>8\u00c3\u20141\u00c3\u201410\u00c2\u00b9\u00c2\u00b2\u00c3\u00b76\u00c3\u20141\u00c3\u201410\u00e2\u0081\u00b9<\/pre>\n<p>You can only get the right answer (1333.333\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6) if you type<\/p>\n<pre>(8\u00c3\u201410\u00c2\u00b9\u00c2\u00b2)\u00c3\u00b7(6\u00c3\u201410\u00e2\u0081\u00b9)<\/pre>\n<p>so it&#8217;s clear that gnome-calculator isn&#8217;t apply the right exponentiation operator precedence when you hit \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc\u00c3\u201410<sup><em>y<\/em><\/sup>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. It would have been so much better if gnome-calculator supported &#8216;E&#8217; scientific notation (1.333E21 for 1.333\u00c3\u201410\u00c2\u00b2\u00c2\u00b9).<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/bugs.launchpad.net\/ubuntu\/+source\/gnome-calculator\/+bug\/1210607\">bug<\/a> is filed, but I don&#8217;t think I trust it any more. <del>I&#8217;m looking at having a proper calculator again, or maybe invest in one of the delightful tiny HP clones from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swissmicros.com\/\">SwissMicros.com<\/a><\/del>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9822\" src=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/cb3ce94e022411e39a5722000a1fac03_7.jpg\" alt=\"HP 49G\" width=\"612\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/cb3ce94e022411e39a5722000a1fac03_7.jpg 612w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/cb3ce94e022411e39a5722000a1fac03_7-160x160.jpg 160w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/cb3ce94e022411e39a5722000a1fac03_7-320x320.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Almost forgot that I had a barely-used HP 49G in the cupboard. It was barely used because the thing eats AAA batteries. Who knew that Dollarama would have a pair of NiMH AAAs for only $2?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, 2021<\/strong>: Use galculator instead. It does the right thing, and supports RPN like a calculator should.
