I&#8217;ve been car-free since 1996, but<br \/>\nwe&#8217;re mostly urbanites, so this may not work for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Most of my ideas come from a great UK magazine called <a href=\"http:\/\/atob.org.uk\/\">AtoB<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We live very near a TTC subway station<\/li>\n<li>I cycle during the summer, take transit at other times. A TTC<br \/>\npass for $90\/month for an annual subscription just can&#8217;t be<br \/>\nbeat.<\/li>\n<li>I have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bromptonbicycle.co.uk\/\">Brompton<\/a> folding bike (amongst far too many others, to<br \/>\nCatherine&#8217;s eternal dismay) which rides well, and plays well with<br \/>\nothers on crowded transit.<\/li>\n<li>Catherine can use rental cars (I don&#8217;t have my Canadian licence<br \/>\nyet, for various annoying bureaucratic reasons). They&#8217;re cheaper<br \/>\nthan running a car if you only need them now and again.<\/li>\n<li>Taxis work for getting big stuff from stores. (Unless you&#8217;re<br \/>\nbuying an eMac computer, which comes in a box too big to fit in a<br \/>\ntaxi &#8230;)<\/li>\n<li>All of our furniture was delivered, at less cost per trip than<br \/>\neven hiring a U-Haul.<\/li>\n<li>We get most of our groceries delivered from <a href=\"http:\/\/grocerygateway.com\/\">Grocery Gateway<\/a><\/li>\n<li>We&#8217;ve considered signing up for <a href=\"http:\/\/autoshare.com\/\">AutoShare<\/a>, a car sharing service in Toronto.
