{"id":8565,"date":"2013-06-17T20:27:45","date_gmt":"2013-06-18T00:27:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scruss.com\/blog\/?p=8565"},"modified":"2025-07-20T12:18:05","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T16:18:05","slug":"using-large-format-paper-with-linux-and-the-epson-workforce-wf-7520-printer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scruss.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/17\/using-large-format-paper-with-linux-and-the-epson-workforce-wf-7520-printer\/","title":{"rendered":"Using large format paper with Linux and the Epson WorkForce WF-7520 printer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Update<\/span>: <\/strong>Nope, I can&#8217;t get this to work any more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have an <a href=\"https:\/\/epson.ca\/For-Work\/Printers\/Inkjet\/Epson-WorkForce-WF-7520-All-in-One-Printer\/p\/C11CB58201\" rel=\"nofollow\">Epson WorkForce WF-7520<\/a>, and I really like it: excellent built-in duplex\u00a0<strong>large format<\/strong> scanner with ADF, CIFS network storage, giant paper bins, photo quality printing up to 330\u00d7482 mm, only slightly expensive print cartridges\u2026 Under Linux, though, it&#8217;s not so well behaved, especially if you want to print on large format paper. This is the workaround I developed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Put the B-size\/11\u00d717&#8243; paper in Tray 1 (the upper one), and the Letter paper in Tray 2. This, unfortunately, matters \u2014 the driver that can print large format can only access the upper tray. On the setup menu on the printer console, tell the printer which tray holds what size of paper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install the <em>epson-inkjet-printer-escpr<\/em> driver; it should be in the standard Ubuntu repos. Define a printer (<em>wf7520-lf<\/em>, for example) that uses this driver. Set the paper size to &#8220;US B 11 x 17 in&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that the lsb and lsb-printing packages are installed:<br><code>sudo apt-get install lsb lsb-printing<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Download and install the non-free <a title=\"epson-201115w\" href=\"https:\/\/www.openprinting.org\/driver\/epson-201115w\" rel=\"nofollow\">epson-201115w<\/a> driver from the <a title=\"EPSON Download Center\" href=\"http:\/\/download.ebz.epson.net\/dsc\/search\/01\/search\/?OSC=LX\" rel=\"nofollow\">EPSON Download Center<\/a>. Define a printer (I used <em>wf-7520<\/em> for the name) using this driver, making sure that the correct PPD (<em>epson-inkjet-printer 1.0.0-1lsb3.2 (Seiko Epson Corporation LSB 3.2)<\/em>) is used. Set it up to use Letter paper, and (important!) set the source to <strong>Paper Cassette 2<\/strong>. You might want to make this printer the system default.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To print to large format, use the command:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-syntaxhighlighter-code \"><pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">\nlp -d wf7520-lf -o PageSize=USB file.pdf\n\n<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To print regular size, just send the job to the <em>wf-7520<\/em> device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(modified from my Ask Ubuntu question\/answer: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/askubuntu.com\/questions\/308398\/selecting-large-format-paper-what-printing-options-work-resolved\">Selecting Large Format Paper: what printing options work?<\/a><\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Update for the (rightly) confused<\/strong>: Epson appear to have hoiked US B \/ 11\u00d717&#8243; support for this printer. Here are my PPDs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Epson-WF-7520_Series-epson-driver.ppd_.gz\">Epson-WF-7520_Series-epson-driver.ppd<\/a> \u2014 this is from the non-free driver. It doesn&#8217;t need to support large format.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/wf7520-lf.ppd_.gz\">wf7520-lf.ppd<\/a> \u2014 this is the large-format driver I use. Compare it with the <a href=\"http:\/\/anonscm.debian.org\/gitweb\/?p=collab-maint\/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr.git;a=blob_plain;f=ppd\/Epson-WF-7520_Series-epson-escpr-en.ppd;hb=HEAD\">epson-inkjet-printer-escpr<\/a> PPD in the Debian code repo, and you&#8217;ll find all references to many paper sizes gone from it. Hmm \u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Copying PPDs from one driver to another may not work, but you&#8217;ve likely nothing to lose.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Update: Nope, I can&#8217;t get this to work any more.
