Credited as &#8220;Stampfel &amp; Weber \u00e2\u20ac\u201d The Original Holy Modal Rounders&#8221;, it&#8217;s a 1981 Rounder release that&#8217;ll probably never see the light as a digital release. And that&#8217;s a crying shame.<\/p>\n<p>It packs a lot of tracks into one album. All of them fun, with the off-kilterness that happens so magically when these two play together.<br \/>\nSide 1:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>You&#8217;ve got the right String Baby, but the wrong Yo-yo<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d as briefly featured on Laugh-In.<\/li>\n<li><em>My Name is Morgan but it ain&#8217;t J. P.<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201dSteve Weber really has that parlour fingerpicking style nailed down.<\/li>\n<li><em>Goin&#8217; to Memphis<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Cash, murdered. Outstanding skreeky fiddle from Peter.<\/li>\n<li><em>Goin&#8217; to Memphis (reprise)<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201da little bit of caterwauling that was too good to throw out<\/li>\n<li><em>Jeanine&#8217;s Dream<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201dthis is a lovely take on\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gBPkrFgSpjQ\">La Danseuse<\/a>, with words by Antonia. I know that Peter&#8217;s been obsessed with this tune for decades.<\/li>\n<li><em>When the Iceworms nest again<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201dsupposedly traditionally Canadian.<\/li>\n<li><em>If You&#8217;ll be my Girl<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201ddropped from their 1965(ish) album because it was original, this shows that S&amp;W write some beautiful bubblegum pop.<\/li>\n<li><em>Aeko<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Lovin&#8217; Mad Tom<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201dShakespeare via Antonia. Centuries old, still haunting us.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Side 2:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Sea of Love<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Steve&#8217;s voice is great for this sappy love song.<\/li>\n<li><em>Come to the Mardi Gras<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201das usual, Peter finds an old tune and makes it crazed.<\/li>\n<li><em>Philadelphia Lawyer<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201da Woody Guthrie tune played <em>almost<\/em> straight.<\/li>\n<li><em>Are You from Dixie?<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201deven if I were, I&#8217;d deny it if faced with someone proclaiming it as dementedly as this.<\/li>\n<li><em>Smokey Joe&#8217;s Caf\u00c3\u00a9<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201da slurfy, sloppy cover.<\/li>\n<li><em>Goodbye to Booze<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201dThis, along with <em>Coldest Woman<\/em>, was one of the two tracks from this album on\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Make-Wish-Potato-Modal-Rounders\/dp\/B00005B2XX\">I Make A Wish For A Potato<\/a>, which got me into this whole Holy Modal Rounder mess in the first place.<\/li>\n<li><em>Junker&#8217;s Blues<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201dan unapologetic heroin user&#8217;s song.<\/li>\n<li><em>Red Rooster<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201dplay this to clear the house. It sets the demented level up against the stops.<\/li>\n<li><em>Coldest Woman<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201da daft little island tune with nicely swung guitar by Steve.<\/li>\n<li><em>Dance in Slow Motion<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201danother sweet song with Peter singing.<\/li>\n<li><em>Unnamed Rag<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201dThe only words on this Weber tune are &#8220;Unnamed Rag&#8221; (if you don&#8217;t count the stalwart &#8220;vo-dee-oh-dee&#8221;-ing from Peter) because he hadn&#8217;t thought of a name for it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It must be about time for a fifth duo album from S&amp;W; there was 15 years between this and <em>HMR2<\/em>, and <em>Too Much Fun<\/em> came 19 years after. I guess since there&#8217;s only been 14 years since that last album, I&#8217;m being a bit premature &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Damn, this is a fine album.
