They&#8217;d give an approximation of a reading,then fail miserably in a variety of stupid ways. The last one, a rip-off of an Extech, decided to show me how its wires were connected to the probes. &#8220;Barely&#8221; is a fair description.<\/p>\n<p>So I thought I&#8217;d buy a decent meter. One that had heft and gravitas, like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsradios.co.uk\/avo8.html\">Avo 8<\/a> that my dad used to bring home from work. The Avo \u00e2\u20ac\u201d seemingly constructed from bakelite, glass and lead \u00e2\u20ac\u201d didn&#8217;t just take readings, it told you <span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">The Truth<\/span> on its mirrored scale.<\/p>\n<p>So I bought an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.home.agilent.com\/agilent\/home.jspx?cc=CA&amp;lc=eng\">Agilent<\/a>. Reliable company, all the right features, beeps politely only when required; a very, very sensible meter. Then I found <em>these<\/em> in the package:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Scan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6910\" title=\"Agilent meter &quot;skins&quot; - no, really\" src=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Scan-713x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"838\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Scan-713x1024.jpg 713w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Scan-111x160.jpg 111w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Scan-222x320.jpg 222w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Scan-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Scan.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Dude, what?! <em>Skins<\/em> on a meter? Meters aren&#8217;t toys. Meters are sensible things used by sensible people. We don&#8217;t want our work distracted by thoughts of <span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Space!<\/span>, <span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">America!<\/span>, <span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Sports!<\/span>, or <span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Some Kind of Bug Thing Eww Squish It Squish It!<\/span> If you were able to get &#8220;skins&#8221; for the Avo 8, they would be about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisden.com\/\">Wisden<\/a>, sheds, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.uk\/tsr2\/history.php\">TSR2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the sticky nonsense, it&#8217;s a good meter. I also managed to catch a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.home.agilent.com\/agilent\/editorial.jspx?cc=CA&amp;lc=eng&amp;ckey=2060152&amp;nid=-34618.920256.00&amp;id=2060152\">Handheld Digital Multimeter Cash Back Offer<\/a>, so it&#8217;s cheaper than competing Flukes and Extechs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;d been surviving on a series of sub-$50 multimeters for years.
