Now I have a very slim brick.<\/p>\n<p>When I upgraded to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/itunes\/overview\/\">iTunes 8<\/a>, it offered an update for my iPod. I let it do its thing, then resync&#8217;ed it. I noticed that the iPod rebooted after the sync &#8212; no big deal &#8212; but then kept rebooting (<a title=\"a somewhat scatological reference to &quot;Me and You and Everyone We Know&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0415978\/\"><em>back and forth &#8230;<\/em><\/a>) forever.<\/p>\n<p>I tried <a href=\"http:\/\/support.apple.com\/kb\/HT1320\">resetting it<\/a>; nope, it would just start doing its thing again.<\/p>\n<p>I tried putting it into <a href=\"http:\/\/support.apple.com\/kb\/HT1363\">disk mode<\/a>, then restoring it; nope, <em>back and forth, back and forth<\/em> &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In desperation, I tried restoring it on a PC, which needed to reformat the iPod. Partial success; it sync&#8217;ed music from the PC, but since my working music library is on my iBook, I had to restore and resync, and guess what? <em>back and forth, back and forth<\/em> &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d heard that the problem could be caused by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oreillynet.com\/mac\/blog\/2006\/05\/cause_for_ipod_nano_spontaneou.html\">empty podcast folders<\/a>, so I cleared out and rebuilt my library, put the iPod into disk mode and restored it on a PC, resync&#8217;ed on the iBook and &#8230; <em>back and forth, back and forth<\/em> &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>As a last try I&#8217;m going to fsck it under Linux. I might be stuck using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yamipod.com\/\">yamipod<\/a>, which is probably a bonus, as all I use iTunes for is as an iPod conduit. I really miss having a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockbox.org\/\">Rockbox<\/a>-capable player, as it just worked the way I expected.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> yeah, that last one did it.
