I did not excel at learning poems by heart; at least, not the ones I was told to learn. I have a difficult relationship with the poem, you could say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when my mother-in-law asked for me to recite it for her daily poetry readings (and knowing full well what she would get), I said yes. Here&#8217;s something like what she got:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Pied_Beauty-Read_by_Stewart_Russell.mp3\"><\/audio><figcaption><em>Pied Beauty<\/em>, read by Stewart Russell \u00e2\u20ac\u201d much against his better judgment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a great poem, but one that should never be inflicted on a teenage boy. Yer man GMH was quite the one for making up words: <em>brinded<\/em> isn&#8217;t a thing, and I dunno what happened with the accents on \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc<em>\u00c3\u00a1ll tr\u00c3\u00a1des<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, but they&#8217;ve gone well into the twee zone. And as for \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc<em>trout that swim<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122: is there any other kind, Gerry?
