{"id":14388,"date":"2017-10-12T00:17:16","date_gmt":"2017-10-12T04:17:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scruss.com\/blog\/?p=14388"},"modified":"2026-01-09T12:45:25","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T17:45:25","slug":"important-research-was-the-eudora-new-mail-chime-from-ren-stimpys-log","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scruss.com\/blog\/2017\/10\/12\/important-research-was-the-eudora-new-mail-chime-from-ren-stimpys-log\/","title":{"rendered":"Important research: was the Eudora \u201cNew Mail\u201d chime from Ren &amp; Stimpy\u2019s \u201cLOG\u201d?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Inspired (obliquely) by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metafilter.com\/169930\/What-walks-down-stairs-alone-or-in-OH-MY-GOD\">this Metafilter post<\/a>, I set out to answer a burning question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LOG chime<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This occurs from second 36 to second 38 of this (archived) video: <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210508065204if_\/https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-fQGPZTECYs?start=33&amp;feature=oembed\">Log Commercial &#8211; Ren &amp; Stimpy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chime when extracted without further processing, sounds like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Original-Log-Commercial_The-Ren-and-Stimpy-Show.wav\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(direct link: <a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Original-Log-Commercial_The-Ren-and-Stimpy-Show.wav\">Original-Log-Commercial_The-Ren-and-Stimpy-Show.wav<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eudora chime<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I found a copy of Eudora Mail 1.44 for Windows (bundled up in an archive quaintly called <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161021140640\/http:\/\/www.k7tty.com\/Utilities\/Windows31\/internet.zip\">internet.zip<\/a>\u009d) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.k7tty.com\/Utilities\/Windows31\/\">here<\/a>. The <strong>EUDOR144.EXE<\/strong> file is itself a Zip archive, and contains several files. The important one is <strong>WEUDORA.EXE<\/strong> (722,944 bytes; SHA256 checksum a35f2ef1e95242228381d9340fff0995f4935223f88a38b9200717107252dfb9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a Windows 16 <em>New Executable<\/em> (NE) file, and I used <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/panzi\/mediaextract\">panzi\/mediaextract<\/a> to scan and extract the RIFF\/WAV data:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/WEUDORA.EXE_000a8200.wav\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(direct link: <a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/WEUDORA.EXE_000a8200.wav\">WEUDORA.EXE_000a8200.wav<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They sure sound similar. But are they \u2026the same?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Comparison<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I made sure that both samples were set to the same rate, and I applied simple amplification in Audacity so that they both had a peak volume of -3 dB. Aligning the tracks as best I could, I got this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tracks001.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"539\" src=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tracks001-1024x539.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tracks001-1024x539.png 1024w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tracks001-160x84.png 160w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tracks001-320x168.png 320w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tracks001-768x404.png 768w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tracks001.png 1094w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Log audio on top, Eudora chime underneath<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Eudora sample is <em>very <\/em>slightly slower than the Log one. It might have been that the Eudora authors sampled the chimes from an analogue video tape.
