It\u2019s supposed to work on \u2018<i>Any computer with an Internet browser and a CD-ROM drive\u2019<\/i>. Guess I don\u2019t just have any computer, then \u2026<\/p>\n<p>The disk \u2014 an interesting mathematical\/artistic study of patterns \u2014 is arranged as a tree of HTML files, with internal links and images. This is how the folders appear on my computer:<\/p>\n<pre>\u251c\u2500\u2500 art\n\u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u251c\u2500\u2500 islam\n\u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u251c\u2500\u2500 preislam\n\u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u2514\u2500\u2500 pstislam\n\u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u251c\u2500\u2500 latt\n\u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u251c\u2500\u2500 other\n\u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u2514\u2500\u2500 quilts\n\u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u251c\u2500\u2500 modern\n\u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u251c\u2500\u2500 large\n\u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u251c\u2500\u2500 patch3\n\u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u2514\u2500\u2500 patch4\n\u2502\u00a0\u00a0 \u2514\u2500\u2500 usa\n\u251c\u2500\u2500 info\n\u251c\u2500\u2500 maths<\/pre>\n<p>All neatly lower case, as one might expect. Unfortunately, the internal links are hard-coded to access links such as <em>\/art\/<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I<\/span>slam\/over.htm<\/em>, and Linux, being good and literal, can&#8217;t find the upper case ones.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the majority of computers quietly ignore the case of letters on removable media. Linux&#8217;s insistence on being correct is at odds with what is generally considered useful. But there&#8217;s a way around this. You can give the mount command options to tell it to be more chill about case:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo mount -t iso9660 -o loop,check=relaxed,map=normal,norock,nojoliet disk.iso \/mnt\/scratch\/<\/pre>\n<p>This works for me quite well:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12247\" src=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screenshot-from-2015-09-08-105754.png\" alt=\"Screenshot from 2015-09-08 10:57:54\" width=\"524\" height=\"713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screenshot-from-2015-09-08-105754.png 524w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screenshot-from-2015-09-08-105754-118x160.png 118w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screenshot-from-2015-09-08-105754-235x320.png 235w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 524px) 100vw, 524px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The CD-ROM is interesting, if a little dated. The author has gone on to produce the website <a href=\"http:\/\/tilingsearch.org\">tilingsearch.org<\/a>, a huge database of historical tile patterns.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I bought a CD-ROM, The World of Patterns.
