Clues include posts like <a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/16\/more-geometrics\/\">this<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/23\/show-your-work\/\">this<\/a>, also <a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/02\/tidied-up-edition-of-bourgoins-arabic-geometrical-design-sourcebook-on-archive-org\/\">this<\/a>, and maybe even <a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/02\/islamic-radial-geometric-design-svg-templates-for-inkscape\/\">this<\/a>. When I refer to Islamic Geometric Design, I&#8217;m more talking about the frameworks, repeat units or grids that are the starting point for the intricate and hypnotic abstract designs that have traditionally been used in Islamic architecture for over a thousand years. Not being that great with manual dexterity, I&#8217;ve found these much slower to draw than I could on a computer. Consequently, I looked around for a good, free tool that people could use to start making these drawings. Most of the operations (including drawing from one intersection to another, rotating objects around a point, buffering lines into polygons) can be done by CAD packages, but these often have a steep learning curve. CAD packages also don&#8217;t tend to have many artistic functions.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, the free drawing packing <a href=\"https:\/\/inkscape.org\/en\/\">Inkscape<\/a> has almost all of the features I need. Just one of the features I use quite often (<a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/17\/inkscape-circles-from-a-point-and-radius\/\">creating a circle from a centre point and a point on the circumference<\/a>; in other words, emulating a compass) isn&#8217;t built in, but can be done with a simple sequence of operations. In this article, I hope to show you some techniques you can build on for making your own patterns.<\/p>\n<h2>Installing Inkscape<\/h2>\n<p>This is covered well on the <a href=\"https:\/\/inkscape.org\/en\/\">Inkscape<\/a> website, so I won&#8217;t repeat it here. It&#8217;s important to get the most recent stable version of Inkscape. Some Linux distributions provide a really old version, so make sure you&#8217;re using at least version <strong>0.91<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Inkscape runs on Linux, Mac and Windows. On Mac, it&#8217;s a little slow and uses some non-<em>(Mac-)<\/em>standard keyboard shortcuts. You may also have to install <a href=\"http:\/\/xquartz.macosforge.org\/landing\/\">XQuartz<\/a> on your Mac for it to run. It works fine on Windows (I tested 8.1).<\/p>\n<h2>Snapping is your friend<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-12114\" src=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screenshot-from-2015-08-23-222952.png\" alt=\"Screenshot from 2015-08-23 22:29:52\" width=\"34\" height=\"497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screenshot-from-2015-08-23-222952.png 34w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screenshot-from-2015-08-23-222952-11x160.png 11w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 34px) 100vw, 34px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re going to have to get to know and love the <strong>Snapping Toolbar<\/strong>, shown at right. When you enable snapping, the items you draw or modify are locked to the node, intersection, object centre or grid point nearest to your cursor. All of the <a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/02\/islamic-radial-geometric-design-svg-templates-for-inkscape\/\">templates<\/a> I made have the most useful snapping modes enabled:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Snap to <strong>Intersection<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d prefer where lines cross<\/li>\n<li>Snap to <strong>Cusp Node<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201dprefer end points of lines, or local extrema of polygons<\/li>\n<li>Snap to <strong>Object Centre<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201dprefer the centre of objects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12258\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12258\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/triangle.svg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12258 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/path4174.png\" alt=\"path4174\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/path4174.png 250w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/path4174-160x160.png 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12258\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Triangle from intersections <br \/>(<em>source SVG is linked from image<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a simple example of a triangle drawn from construction lines. I couldn&#8217;t ever draw a perfect equilateral triangle freehand, but with snapping, it&#8217;s four clicks (<em>three vertices, then a final click on the first vertex to close the figure<\/em>), and it&#8217;s done perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, most of the patterns I make use straight lines. In Inkscape, you&#8217;ll want to use the Pen tool (<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12261\" src=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screenshot-from-2015-09-10-085022.png\" alt=\"Screenshot from 2015-09-10 08:50:22\" width=\"36\" height=\"37\" \/>) with straight lines enabled (<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12262\" src=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screenshot-from-2015-09-10-085041.png\" alt=\"Screenshot from 2015-09-10 08:50:41\" width=\"167\" height=\"36\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screenshot-from-2015-09-10-085041.png 167w, https:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screenshot-from-2015-09-10-085041-160x34.png 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/>).<\/p>\n<h2>Moving the Centre of Rotation<\/h2>\n<p>When you double-click an object in Inkscape in Select &amp; Transform mode (<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12264\" src=\"http:\/\/scruss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screenshot-from-2015-09-10-214602.png\" alt=\"Screenshot from 2015-09-10 21:46:02\" width=\"38\" height=\"40\" \/>), you get shown the rotation handles and the all-important <strong>Centre of Rotation<\/strong>. By default, the centre of rotation is in the centre of the <em>bounding box<\/em> of the object; that is, the centre of the smallest horizontal box that encloses the object. You might think that if you duplicated it (keyboard shortcut: <em>Ctrl+D<\/em>) and flipped it horizontally (keyboard shortcut: <em>h<\/em>), you&#8217;d get your star. Guide lines alone are pretty boring.<\/p>\n<p>You can use <strong>Object \u00e2\u2020\u2019 Fill &amp; Stroke<\/strong> and set <strong>Stroke Style <\/strong>on a path to make it wider, but sometimes you might want to work with the intersections of the edges of these paths. Fortunately, Inkscape makes this relatively easy.<\/p>\n<p>First, give your path the width you want, say 3-5 mm. Then, with the path selected, use <strong>Path \u00e2\u2020\u2019 Stroke to Path<\/strong>. At first, nothing appears to have happen, but change the <strong>Fill<\/strong> to none (the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc\u00c3\u2014\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 icon) and the <strong>Stroke Paint<\/strong> to solid. You&#8217;ll get quite good at using <strong>Undo<\/strong> until you get the effects you want. Once you hide the construction lines, your patterns look much more impressive, as you can&#8217;t easily see how it was put together.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Select Same<\/strong> command allows you to select objects with the same fill and\/or stroke style. I find this useful for selecting objects for grouping, or moving to other layers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clipping<\/strong> objects to basic tile shapes can help to make seamless repeat units for tiling.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Clone \u00e2\u2020\u2019 Create Tiled Clones \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/strong> command is immensely powerful for making patterns out of repeat units. It&#8217;s also rather hard to use. I hope to add some basic examples later, though it&#8217;s hard to get this exactly seamless.
