The Amateur Radio Service
Amateur Radio has been a hobby for more than a century
Small chunks of the radio spectrum reserved for non-commercial, licensed use
Started with Morse code (CW), then voice (Phone), and now digital modes.
Public, un-encrypted messages
The operator (usually) does the protocol and error correction.
Notes:
Your wireless router is in the GHz range and fractions of a watt.
Ham radio is in the megahertz range and 10-100s of watts.
Internet messaging: directed and (hopefully) confidential.
Radio: undirected and public.
